What is Behavior Therapeutic Consultation in Virginia?

Behavior Therapeutic Consultation provides behavior support, assessment, and training to individuals with disabilities, their families, and their service providers. Using the principles of person-centered supports and applied behavior analysis, behavior consultants collaborate to build strategies and accommodations to improve quality of life and decrease behaviors of concern.  Consultation focuses on coaching support teams to identify and respect each individual’s preferences and unique support needs in order for them to have as much independence and self-advocacy as possible.

Behavior Therapeutic Consultation includes:

  • Interviews and observations
  • Assessments
  • Development of Support Tools and Assistive Technology
  • Development of a Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Support Plan
  • Data Analysis
  • Training on plan and support strategies 
  • Resources to support ongoing self-advocacy

  • A trauma informed approach to service delivery that acknowledges the ways that past experiences impact current behaviors
  • Personalized training and resources to include assistive technology support if appropriate based on assessed needs.

Who can receive Therapeutic Consultation in Virginia?

Therapeutic Consultation is available to Virginia residents who receive services through the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Developmental Disability (DD) waiver.  To complete a referral online, click on the referral link at the top of the page.

   Additional Funding Sources

Behavior and assistive technology consultation and assessment is also available as a service funded through grants and private payors. Intersections in Advocacy Consultative Services does not accept private insurance at this time. To find out more about non-waiver funded service options, please contact us and indicate grant/private pay funding.
